Audi RS6 Avant E2
The Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 was a car specially modified for the Pikes Peak race, based on the Audi team's Group B rally experience. The car had:
- Engine: A 2.1-liter inline five-cylinder turbo engine with about 600 hp (some sources even say 598 hp).
- Drive: All-wheel drive, which dominated Audi in the 1980s.
- Weight: Thanks to extensive lightweight materials, the car weighed about 1,090 kg.
- Aerodynamics: Striking front and rear spoilers that provided additional grip.
Walter Röhrl’s victory
Walter Röhrl, one of the greatest rally drivers of all time, competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb for the first time in 1987. He set a new track record with a time of 10:47.85 minutes and became the first driver to break the 11-minute barrier. Röhrl was the perfect driver for this race as he mastered the complex course with all its challenges, including extreme elevation changes and changing weather conditions.
Significance of victory
- Technical dominance: The success of the Audi S1 E2 at Pikes Peak was proof of the technical superiority of the Audi brand in the 1980s.
- Symbolic victory: Röhrl's victory was not only a triumph for him, but also a triumph for the all-wheel drive and turbo technology that Audi had revolutionized in the rally world.
- Fame and legacy: The 1987 victory remains an iconic moment in motorsport history and cemented Röhrl's reputation as one of the greatest drivers of his generation.
This combination of technological innovation and driving skills made the 1987 Pikes Peak Hill Climb one of the most memorable motorsport events.
